Girl Talk
Below is a list and description
of the books we have studied with our Girl Talk group.
 |
Girl
Talk
by Carolyn
Mahaney and Nicole Mahaney Whitacre
This book
is subtitled "Mother-Daughter Conversations on Biblical
Womanhood." It is designed to be read by mother and daughter
together, with the some chapters written by Carolyn (the mother) and
some by Nicole (the now-grown daughter).
The first
half of the book establishes a biblical basis for a healthy
and loving mother-daughter bond. It addresses such issues
as our imperfections, communication, conflict, respect, love, faith,
and honor, complete with many examples from Carolyn & Nicole's
relationship, as well as many practical instructions for us. This
mother-daughter bond must be strong if mothers are going to pass on
Biblical womanhood to their daughters.
The
second half of the book deals with what Biblical womanhood looks
like in the real world. We learn about God's design for women's
roles, fearing God, friendships true beauty, modesty, homemaking in
very practical ways. How important that we follow the blueprint
God has designed for womanhood, rather than the world's blueprint!

transitioning to womanhood can be truly beautiful in God's sight.

the importance of learning these things while they're still young, and
how blessed they will be if they do.
The Companion Guide (written
by Shelley Noonan and Kimberly Zach) provides
helpful discussion questions and Bible
verses to guide our conversations about each chapter. is an older book, but still
helpful, written to help young women

A
testimony from the RVBC Girl Talk group:
Sarah
Mally's book has made a significant impact on our Girl Talk
group, helping us see God's design and priorities for singleness and
marriage. We listened eagerly to the allegorical princess
story. We
read both sobering and hope-giving testimonies from young women who
affirm the
superiority of a biblical outlook compared with the world's
standards. Sarah Mally's teaching spans so many real-life,
every-day concerns that the girls face, about dating, contentment,
guarding your heart, waiting for God's timing, parents, friends, using
singleness for the glory of God, and delighting in the Lord.
There are
also several helpful, practical questions and exercises for parents and
daughters to work on together to help apply this specifically to their
lives. This book is also unique because it is appropriate for
younger
teen girls who are pure and protected. So many
Christian books
on romance and purity include details that we felt were not appropriate
for our
group. So, what a delight it is to have this book, which deals
with the
topic so gently, yet so biblically and focused on Christ! Even
some moms
with younger daughters not old enough for our Girl Talk group read
the
allegorical story sections aloud to their older and younger girls
together. Having said this, it would also be a very helpful book
for a
single woman of any age to read, and in it find comfort and a renewed
focus to
be in love with Jesus Christ. This book is definitely worth
re-reading with our daughters several times throughout their teen years.
